Multimillionaire singing sensation Justin Bieber is what most young girls would describe as the perfect accessory.
But Selena Gomez isn’t most girls, and so tonight at the MuchMusic Awards in Toronto, she fabulously eschewed her famous boyfriend as an escort.
Coolly confident in her own right, the 19-year-old let Bieber, 18 , get on with doing his own thing as she worked the carpet on her own.
In a class of her own: Selena Gomez didn’t need her megastar boyfriend to shine on the red carpet in Toronto tonight
She looked resplendent in a gold minidress with matching shoes and earrings with a slick of brightly coloured lipstick to finish off the look.
And singer and actress Selena betrayed not a hint of awkwardness without her man as she chatted to the crowd, many of whom were brandishing banners decorated with phrases such as: ‘Marry Me Justin!’
Her lover, meanwhile, was busy with his two-year-old brother Jaxon and his protege, Carly Rae Jepsen, further along the carpet.
Meanwhile, Katy Perry made a bid to join the ranks of Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and Captain America.
She’s long favoured the cartoon look, but America’s favourite songstress excelled herself tonight by transforming into a bonafide superhero for the MuchMusic Video Awards.
The 27-year-old looked like she’d stepped straight from the pages of one of Stan Lee’s brightly coloured Marvel sketch stories as she arrived on the red carpet in Toronto tonight.
What are your superpowers, Katy? Ms Perry went for all out Marvel comic glam at tonight’s MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto
With her purple and black hair straightened into the unreal shiny helmet of an action figure, Perry played up to the look in a black and gold gown that screamed screamed special powers.
The gold lace halterneck pulled fiercely into a snakeskin leatherette bodice which tapered into a mini skirt, then diaphanous layers spilled dramatically from the singer’s waist.
It was a dress that begged to be flown in.
Now she’s getting herself some Little Monsters: Katy Perry poses with youngsters dressed in past looks
Proud moment: The youngsters were obviously delighted to be dressed as their idol, and WITH their idol… but were the cakes a step too far?
Is she good or evil? There’s no mistaking Katy’s girl next door ideals, this lady would come to your rescue
Even Perry’s one piece of jewellery – a gold cuff – looked designed to shoot lasers at the flick of a wrist.
But this wasn’t enough for this doyenne of drama, as she brought along a group of young girls dressed in assorted Perry costumes.
One youngster was even wearing cream buns over her breast area, which skirted around the suburbs of decency very dangerously.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star could hardly have minded, however, being very much the all singing, all dancing star in her own right.
